Merce (1919-2009)
27 July | 2009
I think Merce Cunningham was kind of my gateway substance to the world of contemporary dance. I remember hearing about John Cage in high school, and about Black Mountain College, that legendary lost colony from the western part of my home state of North Carolina. I remember wandering through a bookshop in Oxford, England, summer of 2004, paying three times what my youth hostel bed cost for this book by Roger Copeland, a clear look at Cunningham’s role in dance. However far his projects took the concept of dance and theater, the movement itself was always so clean, and classical. I like that. The man worked hard to let beautiful things be.
Great photo by Annie Leibovitz. Wish I had it in a high resolution format to see all the lines in his face. A long life lived.
